Psychodynamic Psychology: Classical Theory and Contemporary Research

psychodynamic theory and treatment well explained, September 13, 2009

This review is from: Psychodynamic Psychology: Classical Theory and Contemporary Research (Paperback)

Clear, interesting and well written. Scientists, students and laypeople all will find this book important and fascinating. Peter Fonagy once said that CBT (cognitive-behavior therapy) is a good aspirin but it is not an antibiotic. But they claim that it is. CBT has produced a treatment for the masses that targets some symptoms and does help in the short run. The treatment does not hold up over time, since it does not address the underlying issues. Psychoanalysis (now the broader term, “psychodynamic”) is scientifically more supported and its treatment is far superior to CBT, but it is harder to test its effectiveness. It is easy to test CBT which is about 10 sessions of basically persuasion and behavioral practicing. Long term dynamic therapy (LDT) was mainly tested by case study and cohort studies, and recently with randomly controlled studies. Matt Jarvis not only reviews the theories but also reviews the recent research showing the superiority of psychodynamic treatment. A must for teaching psychotherapy and for anyone doing psychotherapy. With this book, there is less confusion over the best type of psychotherapy.
