The “Origins of Sexuality and Homosexuality” appeared two years before the publication of my own treatment, “Gay Identity: The Self Under Ban” (McFarland, 1987). I had corresponded extensively with DeCecco and Shively in the writing of my book. Generally I agreed with their approach. Both books make the firm distinction between homosexuality as an experience and the social role created by society to limit and control that behavior.

This distinction was made obvious by the studies of Kinsey and others who showed that these two features frequently had little to do with each other. Often, people with little or even no homosexual experience adopted the gay label, while others enjoyed extensive homosexual experiences while denying the label. Kinsey had found that nearly 50 percent of the adult U.S. population, for instance, had experienced some kind of homosexual pleasure to the point of orgasm. Other studies by Kinsey’s Sex Institute, found that the sexual outlet of those labeled homosexual went from 1 to 5 on the Kinsey scale, a range that would include 50 percent of the adult population.

While DeCecco and Shively’s books emphasizes the psychological process of adopting the gay label, my own work focused on the stigmatic nature of the gay label. Not only is it of such a nature as to change the perceptions by others of the victim of the stigma, but it also causes the victim to tend to organize one’s life and one’s personality around the label. It is difficult enough for young people to control and humanize their sexual desires. It becomes much difficult as one’s sexuality comes to dominate one’s self-image. Nothing is more damaging than the belief that one has no choice about one’s sexual behaviors. No matter what the source or origins of the pleasure, one always has a choice about overt behaviors.

While admitting that “coming out” is often accompanied by a certain elation, it is a process mandated by society and not the nature of the experience. As several investigators point out, it is a warrant to proceed in the behavior. It is as if society says, “Ok. You can proceed in this behavior as long as you take your place in that group and admit that you are different from the rest of us.”

Central to the identity is the conviction that the behavior is caused by some underlying condition and that one has no choice: “I do these things because I am this way.” This is the rationale used to justify the behavior and deflect society’s scorn.

Both books suggest a better way of dealing with society’s ongoing condemnation of homosexual behavior. One way is to enjoy one’s homosexual relationships and be open about them. Another suggests re-defining homosexuality in terms of relationships instead of identity. Both require more courage and strength in sharing one’s homosexual relationships with others while fending off the label. When asked if you are gay, just say, “I don’t believe in the labels.” You have spoken volumes. Your behavior needs no reference to an underlying condition over which you have no choice.

It is all about love.

Scientists, students and laypeople all will find this book important and fascinating. Peter Fonagy once said that CBT (cognitive-behavior therapy) is a good aspirin but it is not an antibiotic. But they claim that it is. CBT has produced a treatment for the masses that targets some symptoms and does help in the short run. The treatment does not hold up over time, since it does not address the underlying issues. Psychoanalysis (now the broader term, "psychodynamic") is scientifically more supported and its treatment is far superior to CBT, but it is harder to test its effectiveness. It is easy to test CBT which is about 10 sessions of basically persuasion and behavioral practicing. Long term dynamic therapy (LDT) was mainly tested by case study and cohort studies, and recently with randomly controlled studies. Matt Jarvis not only reviews the theories but also reviews the recent research showing the superiority of psychodynamic treatment. A must for teaching psychotherapy and for anyone doing psychotherapy. He may have been wrong (and any such contention still remains to be proved) but he was never a fraud. He was a generous human being who cared about the least careworthy of us, those sexually deviant from norms. The tragedy is that those who chose to tear at the fabric of a giant have suceeded in reducing him to a point of controversy and in the process will irreparably impair a great man's reputation and make his work less accesible to those who might have benefited from this incredible schloar's contribution to the field that all think they know about but don't. I was fortunate to call him friend and grieve his loss. John Money was one of the greatest sexologists that ever lived. He may have been wrong (and any such contention still remains to be proved) but he was never a fraud. He was a generous human being who cared about the least careworthy of us, those sexually deviant from norms. The tragedy is that those who chose to tear at the fabric of a giant have suceeded in reducing him to a point of controversy and in the process will irreparably impair a great man’s reputation and make his work less accesible to those who might have benefited from this incredible schloar’s contribution to the field that all think they know about but don’t. I was fortunate to call him friend and grieve his loss. This is a collection of scientific papers
from the second half of John Money’s career
as an investigator of unusual phenomena related to sex.
Each paper has a new introduction and abstract,
which often draw on new discoveries since the original publication.
These articles lay the foundations for much future sexology.
Many questions remain unanswered,
but this book should help to formulate the questions more clearly.
Some major themes: female, male, & in-between;
sex-changes; transsexualism; tranvestism; sexual orientation;
& a few paraphilias (masochism, amputee, ants).

Future sexologists might well begin with the reports in this volume.
The phenomena are here displayed;
next we need well-formulated hypotheses,
followed by careful research to see how well these conjectures hold up.

Here are three specific variations of sex and gender
that Money deals with in this volume:

(I) ambiguity of biological sex caused by unusual chromosomes
and various syndromes caused by unusual hormone-mixes and insensitivities
that lead to unusual sexual morphology and perhaps psychology.
Some children born intersexed were raised as girls, others as boys,
demonstrating the power of sex-assignment and rearing.
These individuals who were born between the sexes
were followed with respect to the following behaviors: fantasy, dating,
sexual behavior, marriage, & reproduction or parenthood by adoption.

(II) transsexualism, the impact of sexual birth defects
on the male/female self-designation of the individuals
and their later requests for sex-changes.

(V) sexual orientation: Is adult heterosexuality,
homosexuality, or bisexuality affected by the following factors?
sexual birth-defects; a period of uncertainty about one’s sex;
pre-natal hormones; being the sex-partner of a pedophile;
situational homosexuality in prison?

(VI) Transvestism is discussed mainly
in the chapter on gynemimesis–men imitating women.

John Money has laid the groundwork
for at least the next generation of sexology.

FOR THE SAKE OF ELENA is my introduction to Elizabeth George and her detectives Lynley and Havers. I enjoyed the twists in the plot; as soon as I had made up my mind that a certain character was guilty, a new piece of evidence would be discovered to deflect suspicion. All of the suspects were introduced early enough for the reader to ponder the guilt or innocence of each. I look forward to more of George’s work.

Fans of the winning combination of Inspector Thomas Lynley and Sergeant Barbara Havers will enjoy it, but you don't need to know the detectives to enjoy the story.<p> ~ * ~ Elena, a young college girl at Cambridge, has just been killed. She was deaf. This was more than a "handicap"- it became a battleground for her, between the students who wanted her to become part of the "Deaf"- not trying to "fit in" by reading lips, etc; and her father, who tried to minimize her deafness- asking her to fit in with his life. ~ </p><p>~ * ~, Elizabeth George is always strong in characterizations. She fills her story with complex characters, each of whom have weaknesses that we can sympathize with, and their own selfish and unpleasant motives. The conflicts between the characters are so well plotted; we are drawn into the story completely. <br/>~ * ~ Unlike most of her mysteries, I started to see the conclusion. Elizabeth George usually blinds us to the obvious. ~ * ~ This is one of Elizabeth George’s better novels. It’s utterly absorbing, and the characters will evoke strong reactions- like or dislike, sometimes both! Fans of the winning combination of Inspector Thomas Lynley and Sergeant Barbara Havers will enjoy it, but you don’t need to know the detectives to enjoy the story.

~ * ~ Elena, a young college girl at Cambridge, has just been killed. She was deaf. This was more than a “handicap”- it became a battleground for her, between the students who wanted her to become part of the “Deaf”- not trying to “fit in” by reading lips, etc; and her father, who tried to minimize her deafness- asking her to fit in with his life. ~

~ * ~, Elizabeth George is always strong in characterizations. She fills her story with complex characters, each of whom have weaknesses that we can sympathize with, and their own selfish and unpleasant motives. The conflicts between the characters are so well plotted; we are drawn into the story completely.

Much of the book has to do with well-meaning, loving people trying to meet the expectations of those they love. Elena, the victim, is deaf with parents who have spent twenty years trying to make her as "normal" as possible. But what is normal for a deaf person? Much (too much) of the book dwells on Havers internal battle over whether she should send her Alzheimer's inflicted mother to a small care facility. </p><p>I've withheld a fifth star because of my unresolved confusion about Lynley's relationship with Lady Helen. I really enjoy this series but sometimes the publication order and the actual timeline are confusing. In this book, all of a sudden and out of the blue (for me) Lynley is ardently persuing Lady Helen. There are references the "past nine months" but I felt like I'd missed something. Quite frankly, I'm not surprised by Helen's reluctance to get involved if the building blocks of the relationship of are as vague to her as they were for me.</p><p>Bottom-line: A strong and interesting mystery that should satsify old and new readers alike.
